Miri Furstenberg

I gave a lecture today in Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem on Photography and Trauma. While preparing for it, I met with Miri Furstenberg the sole survivor of the Maale Akrabim massacre in 1954. She told me the horrendous details of how she survived inside the bus during the attack. The photo she is holding showing her aged five, on the Egged bus before the attack. It is inspiring to see that she is still able to smile. I gave her a hug after this very emotional and moving session. What I did not get to say in the lecture was that conceptually we are all surrounded by trauma here in Israel, but I believe we need to transcend it, look at Miri's smile and have hope, confidence and love....
